Showit United // Real Photography Conference Review
Chances are you’re reading this particular blog post because you are a photographer yourself! So first off, hey there!
Jeff and I are so excited you are here!
We’ve had the chance to go to a couple of different photography workshops and conferences over the last couple of years. So basically we’ve decided to post our personal and completely honest reviews on ALL. OF. THEM! Excited yet?! Cool.
Well we are going to talk about quite possibly the best photography Conference in the US today a bit. It’s taken away the desire to try any other other big ones out because of the culture it has cultivated!
You might have heard of it, maybe you haven’t. Whatever the case you need to hear what it’s all about.
Showit United Conference.
The Showit United Conference was created and is now ran by Todd Watson from the Showit website hosting and creation platform. Todd has a heart of gold and has built an amazing company, an amazing platform, and an amazing community (of huggers especially, if you aren’t a hugger, well you will be! <3).
Showit United has such a unique feel for a conference. We’ve been twice now so we going to give you our perspective on BOTH times individually, as it will help clarify possibly if this is the conference for you!
Regardless of your level of business in photography, the one thing anyone will get out of Showit United is the community feels, you’ll probably make some awesome new photography friends, we have both years we attended it.
On that note.
Let’s dive right in on our year 1 experience!
The first year we attended was the most impactful out of the two for us! We were are a point in our business that we couldn’t continue with our current schedules for the day job and the business and Showit United really helped us propel our business forward after we attended the first year. We heard from some amazing speakers and were able to add new skills and parts to our business workflow.
I would rate the first time we went to United a solid 9/10, we just wish we had been better prepared to possibly pay for the extras some of the speakers had discounts on at the show. And then there were a couple of speakers that were just WAY. TOO. SALESY! (needless to say those ones were NOT at the next years conference thankfully!). I would say if you are in your first 3 years of business and are looking to get out of the “new” stages of being a photographer, or you are in need to build yourself a community of industry friends then United is totally worth it!
Now for our 2nd year experience.
It was still an amazing time for networking and community. It’s always a very moving experience when the speakers can bring a room full of adults to tears from compassion and understanding. We all need that solid group of people who just get you in your life. A lot of the speakers though, still heavily catered to just basic topics or only scratched the surface in the break outs. This could be a sales tactic for some of them, but some just can’t give you more in depth knowledge easily in a 45 minute – 1 hour time slot. So for us the education we received on our second go around, minus one on one discussions and Anchor & Veils breakout just wasn’t up to par on our current level of need.
We really needed some more beefy topics for intermediate photographers in their business. I just didn’t feel like there was one in each break out time slot. So if you are going a second time purely to grow business wise, I would possibly recommend finding a more intimate less people more intensive and dedicated to you workshop. (We highly recommend Anchor & Veils workshop and if they launch new dates y’all better jump on that shiz because its so gucci!). But if you thrive on that super supportive community aspect most of all, totally keep going back to Showit United! We will probably go back again at some point, but more for the community aspect and not just for education. We would rate our second Showit Experience a 7/10.
Our biggest, and I mean BIGGEST peeve with Showit United are the styled shoots. I have only thoroughly enjoyed 1 to the fullest. For my type A brain I think everyone just needs to freaking get the shot and GTFO of the way for the next person. The best shoot was Mike Colons, because he made dang sure EVERYONE lined up and had a chance to shoot. So that person’s got to caputre exactly the angles they wanted for 3 minutes each after he give some education on shooting. It was great, we all walked away happy and there was no frenzy, and some of the more introverted attendees walked away with killer images too.
Most of the shoots honestly just don’t have enough time. And we would rather they categorize them into 2 different categories. The shoot and learn shoots and the just for pretty portfolio pictures shoots. So those who are wanting to hone a skill can do that and those just wanting pretty new photos can do that. This way no one gets frustrated when they are trying to learn and there is others sitting there shooting front and center every second.
So yeah it’s a totally awesome culture to be apart of and I doubt we will ever leave the Showit platform for our businesses. Todd and his team are so awesome at what they do! This is just our honest opinions on the two Showit United conferences we’ve attended.
